Older Macintoshes

The instructions that follow apply to Macs that have older versions of the operating system. You should follow them if your operating system is older than 7.5.3, or if your computer lacks Open Transport and/or PPP. To check for the needed Internet components, go to the Apple Menu, select Control Panels and look for TCP/IP. If you do have TCP/IP, then check to see if you also have either PPP or Remote Access. If you do, then follow the instructions for New Macintoshes. Otherwise, read on.

We provide a three-disk set with the shareware and freeware you need to access the Internet. The disks are available at our stores and through our affiliates. Keep in mind that to access the Internet you need Operating System 7.1, or preferably, an even newer version. Earlier versions will not work, and even 7.1 can be sticky on occasion. Once properly installed and configured, the software is reliable and easy to use. If you get stuck, then give us a call when you are sitting at your computer and can describe the problem in detail.

By way of caution, if you have an existing account with America On Line (AOL), CompuServe, Prodigy or another Internet provider, the connection may interfere with your new connection to Cyber Mesa. If you no longer plan to use the old connection, then we recommend that you take the time to remove all remnants. From the Apple menu bar go to Edit / Find File and do a search on the name of the old service. If you find files that are clearly from the old provider, then move them to your Trash and empty the trash.

Installation

Before inserting the Cyber Mesa disks, make sure that they are write-protected. In other words, you should be able to see light through the window in the upper right corner. If need be, slide the plastic opener on the back of the disks.

Insert Disk A in the drive and double-click on the disk icon that appears on your Desktop. Then double-click the folder icon in the window that opens. You will see four icons. Drag Data Installer 1 and Install FreePPP in turn to the Desktop (any free space on the screen). As each icon reaches the Desktop, its file will be copied from the floppy disk to your hard drive.

Next double-click on the new copy of Install FreePPP that you put on the Desktop. The program will install. Whenever a requester pops up, press the Enter key to continue the process. When done, your computer will reboot of or its own accord. If the Install FreePPP stops at some point before the computer reboots, then skip to the FreePPP Error Messages.

If your installation of FreePPP was successful, you will discover a small telephone icon on the right side of the menu bar on the Desktop. If the icon is not there, then reinstall FreePPP (it sometimes takes more than one try).

Now you are ready to load Eudora, the email program, and Netscape, the browser for the World Wide Web. Insert Disk B of the Internet at Cyber Mesa disks into your disk drive. Double-click on its icon. Open your Hard Disk icon and make a new folder by clicking on File / New Folder. Label the folder Internet Applications. Drag the Eudora Light icon into the folder. Using Disk C from the Internet at Cyber Mesa follow the same procedure for Netscape.

At this point you might want to create aliases for Eudora and Netscape so that they are accessible from the Apple Menu, the Desktop or the Launcher, according to your preference. To create an alias, click once on Eudora Light in the Internet Applications folder. Then select File / Make Alias from the menu bar. A new alias icon will appear. Drag the icon to the area or folder you will use to start Eudora. If you wish, you can rename the icon to Eudora. Follow the same procedure for Netscape.

The next step is to configure the new programs so that you can dial into the Internet at Cyber Mesa and then access the Internet.

Configuration

On you hard disk is a copy of either TCP/IP or MacTCP. The software enables you computer to communicate across the Internet. From the Apple Menu select Control Panels and click on TCP/IP or MacTCP. From the sections below, follow the instructions for the software that you have.

          TCP/IP

You will need to make the following entries:

                                  Connect via:                       FreePPP
                                  Configure:                          Using FreePPP Server
IP Address:                        will be supplied by server
Subnet mask:                     will be supplied by server
Router address:                 will be supplied by server
                                  Name server addr.:           198.59.109.7
                                                                              206.165.6.10
Implicit Search Path:        cybermesa.com (all lower case)
Search Domains:               cybermesa.com (all lower case)

When done, simply close the screen and continue on to FreePPP.

          MacTCP

After clicking on MacTCP, highlight FreePPP, thus bringing up an extension to
the window. Click on moreto bring up the MacTCP configuration box.

You will need to enter the following information:

                                  Obtain Address:                 Select Server
IP Address: Class:             C (ignore other numbers in section)
Server Info: Domain          cybermesa.com (all lower case)
                                  Server Info: IP Address    198.59.109.7
Server Info: Default          Select the top circle

Before clicking OK, make certain that there are no periods in the two boxes
below cybermesa.com. Continue on to FreePPP.

Free PPP

Click on the telephone icon on the right side of the menu bar to access the FreePPP Menu. Select the icon labeled FreePPP Setup.

Note that the FreePPP Setup screen has four tabs a little above the middle (if not, then click on the. triangle in the lower left corner of the window). Click on the Accounts tab and then on Edit. Fill in the boxes and make selections to match the following:

Next, click on the Dial-up tab and put in the number that you will dial to make a local connec-
tion to Cyber Mesa. Click on OK, and click on OK again. Select the Modem tab, then click on the Edit button. If not selected, choose Auto Detect Modem. Click on OK. You are ready to test your work.

Connecting

From the General tab click on Connect. You should hear your modem dialing and negotiating with the Cyber Mesa modem. As the connection progresses, a FreePPP status screen will show you the progress. Ultimately, just before the status screen disappears, you will see the word Successful! Congratulations.

If during the login process, you have the misfortune to witness an error message, then you will need to re-examine your set-up and/or proceed to Troubleshooting on Page 11. The most common human error is a typo or two in the Connection Script. Another frequent problem concerns the modem initialization string, also covered under Troubleshooting.

Normally, to begin your Internet session, you will go to the FreePPP Menu (telephone icon) on the menu bar and select Open PPP Connection. Alternately, you can select Open FreePPP Setup and click on Connect. The advantage of using Setup is that you can then click on the small i to view your modem speed. Once the connection has been established, you can open Netscape or Eudora (which still need to be configured). To disconnect from the Internet, return to the telephone icon and select Close PPP Connection.

Eudora and Netscape

Now you need to configure Eudora and Netscape. Open Eudora and select Special / Options from the menu bar. Then click on Personal Info and fill in the blanks with your specific information:

POP account:        userid@pop.cybermesa.com (this must utilize "cybermesa")                      Real name:           Type in your name or 'handle'
                      Return address:    userid@preferreddomain.com

Note that the POP account and Return address are both valid email addresses for you, though not necessarily the same. The POP account tells your computer where to find your email, while those to whom you send email see and use the Return address. The Internet at Cyber Mesa supports a number of domains from which you can select for your Return address (view domain selection).

Next, select Hosts. For SMTP Server, type in smtp.cybermesa.com. The SMTP Server handles your outbound mail. if you are dialed into Cyber Mesa, then smtp.cybermesa.com is the appropriate SMTP Server. If you happen to check your mail from a friend's computer and Internet account in another part of the world, the above settings apply with the exception of the SMTP Server. When you are on another system and want to reply to email, you must use the local provider's SMTP Server. By not allowing mail to be sent from Cyber Mesa unless the sender is a subscriber at an approved address, we help to thwart spam (junk email).

If you would like to avoid typing in your password each time you open Eudora, select Checking Mail and click on Save Password. Also note the option to "Leave mail on server". This is not a good idea on a day-to-day basis because you waste some of your space on our Server. When you take a trip, however, or if you use another computer at work, it is handy to leave the mail on our Server so that all of your incoming mail downloads to your main computer, even if you have already read it on another computer.

There are lots of other features within Eudora's Options that you can experiment with at your leisure. For now, click on OK to exit Options. When connected to the Internet, you can check for mail by selecting File / Check Mail. If you have new mail, open it by double clicking on the message in the In box. If nothing else, you can send yourself some email in order to test your configuration.

To send an email go to Message / New Message on the menu bar. Fill in the To and Subject fields. Note that the body of the message goes below the line. When done, click Send. To reply to a message that you have received, go to Message / Reply. Eudora takes over and rearranges the received message to create the proper addressing for the reply. Keep in mind that while you do need to be connected to the Internet to send and receive mail, you can read and compose mail off-line. By doing so, you will use less connect time. On to Netscape!

Open Netscape and select Options from the menu bar, then Preferences. Next select Styles. Under Window Styles / Start with be sure that Home Page Location is selected, and in the box provided type in http://www.cybermesa.com. You have the option of using any Web Site for your Start Page, but you save time if you use Cyber Mesa because our Site is on the same network that you access with your modem.

Next, from Preferences, select Mail and News from the pop-down menu. Under Mail Server type in pop.cybermesa.com. Under Your email enter your email address, for example, hsimpson@newmexico.com. Even though you will use Eudora for email, you should configure the mail in Netscape so that you can send mail to addresses listed on Web Sites without leaving Netscape. Under News in the News Server box type the news server name, news.cybermesa.com

Netscape is ready for use. When you next connect to the Internet, the Web Site you selected above will appear on the screen. The Internet at Cyber Mesa features some points of interest under Surfing the Web. Alternately, you can type in a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in the Location box. Please note that the row of buttons under the Location box no longer refers to valid addresses. We recommend that you initiate a search by typing in the Location box http://home.netscape.com/escapes/search. After you reach the Web Site, go to Bookmarks / Add Bookmark. When you want to revisit the Site, go to Bookmarks and select Netscape Net Search. On the Web Site itself you will see tabs that you can click on for other search engines.

There is a lot of exciting software on the Internet that you can download at the click of a button. We encourage you to become comfortable with the programs you have just loaded and the Internet in general. Then you can download newer versions of Netscape and Eudora or programs for just about any application.

If you have difficulty, please give us a call before the onset of frustration. We will do our best to help with connectivity issues, but we do not claim expertise in all areas of Internet software. Keep in mind that often the best source for software support is from the software producer. Also, the Internet itself is perhaps the greatest resource in the world...and you can now take advantage of it!

FreePPP Error Messages

"You must have either MacTCP or TCP/IP to use FreePPP"

The error tells you that you do not have any TCP/IP software on your system. TCP/IP is essential for communicating on the Internet. Hence, you will need to install the MacTCP provided on Disk A. Insert the disk in your disk drive and double-click on its icon, then double click on the folder icon. Next, open the Hard Disk icon on your Desktop, and then open the System folder. Drag MacTCP from the floppy disk window onto the icon for the Control Panels folder, thereby installing MacTCP by copying it from the disk. Then go ahead and install FreePPP.

"The version of MacTCP installed on your computer is too old to work with FreePPP"

In this instance, you need to delete the pre-existing MacTCP and replace it with the MacTCP 2.0.6 supplied on Disk A. To delete MacTCP, double-click on the Hard Drive icon and go to the System folder. Find the three separate components of MacTCP and drag them to the Trash: MacTCP Control Panel in the Control Panels folder, MacTCP Prep in the Preferences Folder, and MacTCP DNR in the System folder itself. Be sure to empty the Trash. Then install MacTCP according to the instructions in the paragraph immediately above.

Open Transport Version 1.0 was a bit of a bomb and must be replaced with a later version of TCP/IP or with the MacTCP on Disk A of our disk set. To delete the old TCP/IP search (do a "Find File") for all instances of TCP/IP and Open Transport. Delete them by putting them in the Trash. Empty the Trash. Follow the directions for installing MacTCP in the first paragraph in this section.

You may come across other error messages, Hopefully, their meaning will be apparent. If not, give us a call, and read us the message off the screen.
